21 Years, 21 Lessons

Today I turn 21! I feel like I am at an interesting point in life right now - fighting my way through the 'beginners-course-in-adulting', excited for what the future holds yet uncertain as to how I want to get there or where to even start. 

Despite all this, I am truly grateful for life and have faith that I will continue to walk in my purpose as the days, weeks, months and years go by.

Here's 21 things I've learnt in 21 years.

1 | There is always something to be grateful for. Stop picking at the not-so-great moments in life and express gratitude - always.

2 | The mind is extremely powerful. Discipline and control your thoughts. Also, stop overthinking - it will never help you.

3 | Let go of the reins of control and just let God, be God. Trust the timing. Trust the process. Trust the encounters.

4 | Be content in the highs and the lows. What movie was ever worth watching without the plots and twists?
Philippians 4:12 - I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.

5 | Sometimes, it's okay to be selfish. Take the time out from the world and re-energize.

6 | Do things with your chest - BE BOLD. Be fearless in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire and put 100% into whatever you are embarking on.

7 | Faith as small as a mustard seed actually does move mountains.

8 | Keep investing in yourself - go and speak to new people, go and turn that idea into reality, go and join that community and make a difference, go and apply for that internship, go and attend that networking event even though you don't know what to say or how to conduct yourself. Embrace and love your entire being. Develop and polish the areas that need a bit more work so that you can be your best self.

9 | Keep building.

10 | Procrastination is not the one. It has never been your friend.

11 | Perception is everything - see failure as opportunities for growth and development.

12 | Love, with wisdom - You cannot pour out of an empty cup. It's so important to protect your peace and refuel so that you can show love to the world around you. Unconditionally.

13 | Invest and support the ones around you - There's nothing better than seeing your friends and people around you grow, tick things of to do lists and achieve long term goals. Keep investing in and being a cheerleader in the lives of those around you. It means more to them than you think.

14 | Don't box yourself - Utilize every skill God has blessed you with and watch how your steps are ordained. Boxes are not helpful.

15 | Learn to blossom rather than hastily jump your way through life. It's all a process.

16 | Keep giving.

17 | Don't allow the opinions and voices of this world to dictate your life. Only allow God's Word to move and fuel you.

18 | As you grow, you start to realise you don't actually know anything. Ha. Enjoy the journey of knowing and getting wisdom. 

Proverbs 4:7 - Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.

19 | Mentors are important. Learn from others who have also walked the same journey so you avoid falling into potential loopholes.


20 | Surrounding yourself with good community is important. Community that doesn't see your existence as a burden but rather encourages, nourishes, challenges and supports you on your journey in life. 

21 | Do not be stifled by people. Either way, people will make opinions and form a judgement whether good or bad. Live life for the audience of one - God.
