#CommonTies | Commonwealth Youth Event CHOGM 2018

What was the event about?

This Wednesday, I attended the #CommonTies event hosted by Commonwealth Youth in London. The aim of the event was to bring together young people across the Commonwealth to learn more about the variety of networks open to young people as well as understand how we can contribute to the Commonwealth and have our voices heard.

In addition, the event was created to raise awareness about the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting also known as #CHOGM2018 which is soon approaching (a month to go!). CHOGM is a internationally recognized Summit that occurs every two years where the Heads of Government from every Commonwealth country gathers together to discuss strategies, develop policies and solutions to the world's most pressing issues. This year, the Summit will be held in London. The summit’s theme is: ‘Towards a common future’ and will focus on building on the strengths of the Commonwealth to ensure that the organisation is able to respond effectively to global challenges and deliver a more prosperous, secure, sustainable and fair future for all its citizens, particularly its young people. The Commonwealth strongly believes that the future of the Commonwealth depends on its one billion young people (us!) and the summit aims to have a strong youth focus. This year's themes are:

A more sustainable future

A fairer future

A more secure future

A more prosperous future

How did you find out about the event?

I found out about this event via the Commonwealth Youth Twitter page and was sure to send the link to a few friends also interested in the Global Health and International Development space.

What else did you get up to and how do I find out more information?

Throughout the event, a number of different speakers delivered talks on their involvement with the Commonwealth such as Barbara Kasumu who is the Founder and Director of Elevation Networks. She discussed the new Commonwealth Roadshow initiative that has been launched this year and will be stopping in different cities across the UK. Other speakers included Geoff Thompson MBE, Arif Zaman, Cat Legged, Vijay Krishnarayan and Tiffany Daniels.
